FAQ For Patients
Q. What is physical medicine and rehabilitation, and how is it different from other specialties?
A. Physical medicine and rehabilitation (also called physiatry) is a medical specialty focused on restoring function and improving quality of life for people affected by injury, illness, or disability. Unlike surgery-focused specialties, physiatrists like Dr. Stephenson take a comprehensive, non-surgical approach, diagnosing the root cause of pain or dysfunction and building a coordinated treatment plan that may include interventional procedures, therapy, and long-term management.
Q. Do I need a referral to make an appointment?
A. Patients can self-refer to Rincon Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, so a referral is not required to schedule an appointment. If you were referred by an attorney, physician, or another provider, simply let our team know when you call.
Q. What should I bring to my first appointment?
A. Please bring a valid photo ID, any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans) on disc or via a digital link, a list of current medications, and any prior medical records related to your condition. If you were involved in an accident, bring any documentation you’ve received related to the incident.
Q. What conditions does Rincon treat?
A. Rincon specializes in the evaluation, treatment, and long-term management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). From initial diagnosis through recovery and ongoing care, we provide comprehensive support for patients with TBI, including those resulting from motor vehicle crashes, falls, workplace accidents, and other traumatic events. For a complete list of our treatments, therapies, and services, please visit our Services page.
